Buying a car in Ghana: your questions answered

Staying safe from scams, documents and ownership, cars from Japan and Korea, and cars ready to drive in Ghana.

Staying safe from scams

How can I tell if a car dealer in Ghana is genuine?

Visit the yard in person and check that the business has a real, verifiable address and a registered name. Ask for the registration details (ours: D Akoah Investments Limited, [REGISTRATION NO.]), read reviews from past buyers, and be careful of anyone who pushes you to decide quickly. A genuine dealer is happy for you to inspect the car and take your time.

Should I pay before I have seen the car?

No. Never pay for a car you have not seen and inspected. Scammers often ask for a deposit to hold a car you have only seen in photos. For cars already in Ghana, see it, test drive it, then pay. For cars still in Japan or Korea, payment terms are agreed in writing: [YOUR POLICY].

Who should I pay, and how?

Pay only at our office, into the business account in the company's registered name: [BUSINESS NAME / BANK / ACCOUNT]. Avoid paying cash to individuals or to a personal mobile money number, and always get a signed receipt that names the car and the amount. This website never asks for card or bank details.

How can I spot a fake car website or advert?

Warning signs include prices far below the market, no physical address, a new social media page with few posts, photos that appear on other sites, pressure to pay quickly, and requests for card or bank details. Check the address, call the number, and visit. If something feels wrong, walk away.

Someone is using your name to ask me for money. What should I do?

We only reply from the WhatsApp number and phone number on this website: [NUMBER]. If anyone else says they are us, do not pay, and message us straight away.

Can I ask for a video of the car before I visit?

Yes. Ask for a live video call of the exact car, including the dashboard and the engine. A video helps you shortlist, but it does not replace seeing the car yourself.

Documents and ownership

What documents should I see before buying a car?

Ask to see the registration documents and check that they are genuine and complete, that the seller is the registered owner or the importer named on the customs papers, and that all statutory requirements have been met. [LIST THE DOCUMENTS YOU PROVIDE WITH EVERY CAR]

How do I make sure the car is transferred into my name?

Complete the ownership transfer with the DVLA and keep copies of every signed document. The DVLA has warned that incomplete transfers can cause legal problems for buyers later. [EXPLAIN HOW YOU HELP WITH TRANSFER]

What if the seller cannot prove they own the car?

Do not buy it. A seller must have the right to sell the car and pass on lawful ownership. If ownership is unclear, you carry the risk and can end up in a long dispute.

Will I get a receipt or sales agreement?

[YOUR POLICY: for example, every sale comes with a signed receipt that names the car, the chassis number and the price.]

Cars from Japan and Korea

What does C&F price mean?

C&F means cost and freight: the price of the car plus shipping to Tema Port. Import duty, taxes, port charges and clearing are separate, and we give you a full breakdown.

Why are some prices in US dollars and others in cedis?

While a car is still in Japan or Korea, its price is in US dollars, and we show the cedi equivalent at that day's exchange rate. For cars already in Ghana, prices are in Ghana cedis.

Why does an incoming car say Ask price?

After a car is loaded, the final cedi price depends on its arrival date, duties and the exchange rate. Message us and we will quote you.

How long does shipping take?

Transit from Japan or Korea to Tema is usually around two months. Signed-in clients can follow the estimated arrival date of cars on the way.

How are import duties worked out in Ghana?

Duty and levies are based on the customs-assessed value of the car, which includes cost, insurance and freight. Engine size and the age of the car affect the rate. Rules change, so check with the Ghana Revenue Authority or ask us for the current breakdown.

Is there an age limit for imported used cars?

Yes. Ghana restricts and penalises imports of older vehicles, so we only list cars that meet the current rule. [CONFIRM THE CURRENT AGE LIMIT WITH YOUR CLEARING AGENT]

Ready to drive cars in Ghana

What does ready to drive mean?

It means the car is already in Ghana and has been inspected and prepared for sale. [LIST EXACTLY WHAT IS DONE BEFORE A CAR IS LISTED]. You can see it, test drive it and take it home.

Can I test drive a car?

Yes. Book a test drive on the car's page, or message us on WhatsApp or call, then visit our yard in Accra.

Can I bring my own mechanic to inspect the car?

Yes. Bring any mechanic you trust to inspect the car before you decide.

Do you deliver cars?

No. We are in Accra and we serve buyers from all over Ghana. We do not deliver. If you are not in Accra, we show you the car on a live video call, you can send any mechanic you trust to inspect it, and when you are satisfied you visit our office, pay and collect your car.

Do you offer instalment payments?

Is there a warranty or after-sales support?
